The University of Maiduguri has announced the temporary suspension of lectures and closure of the school due to severe flooding in the city of Maiduguri.
The flood, caused by damage to the Alau Dam, has ravaged large parts of the town, displacing thousands of residents and threatening several other communities, particularly those along river banks.
According to Malam Ahmed Lawan, the registrar of the University, the decision to suspend lectures and close the campus was made to protect lives and property.
Fortunately, the university itself is reported to be safe.
The extent of the damage in terms of lives and properties is yet to be determined, but many residents have been significantly affected by the flood.
The university's closure is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and staff.
Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
