Vice President Sen. Kashim Shettima has arrived in Maiduguri to commiserate with victims of the devastating floods that have ravaged the city and surrounding areas.
Shettima expressed deep sorrow over the disaster, which has affected countless families and resulted in widespread destruction.
During his visit, Shettima stated, 'I am deeply devastated by the flood that has engulfed Maiduguri and its environs. My heart goes out to the families who have tragically lost their homes and livelihoods in this calamity.'
The vice president assured the affected communities that the Federal Government is committed to providing necessary support and resources to alleviate their suffering.
He noted that efforts are underway to evacuate and resettle residents, provide food, shelter, and medical assistance, and implement comprehensive flood mitigation measures.
Shettima commended the Borno State government for its swift response and praised the resilience of the local residents.
He also acknowledged the increasing threats posed by climate change and highlighted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's comprehensive roadmap to tackle these challenges.
In collaboration with Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, Shettima assured that the government's approach will be guided by historical data, climate forecasts, and hydrological modelling to effectively manage flood risks.
