The European Union has praised Governor Babagana Umara Zulum's efforts in empowering women and girls in Borno State, particularly through the Muna Vocational Training Institute.
The institute built by the governor provides training to youth affected by the Boko Haram insurgency, with a notable focus on including women and girls in traditionally male-dominated fields like welding.
Borno State has been ravaged by the over a decade-long Boko Haram insurgency, which has had a devastating impact on the lives of women and children. They have been the most affected during and after the conflict, facing displacement, trauma, and economic hardship.
Ambassador Gautier Mignot, Head of the European Union mission to Borno, commended Gov. Zulum's vision and the state government's efforts in building centers like the Muna Vocational Training Institute.
'I'm applauding this wonderful achievement. It's one example of many centres built by the state government under the guidance of Governor Zulum and his vision,' Mignot said.
He emphasized the importance of vocational training for young people in the state, citing similar experiences in Europe, especially in Germany.
'Vocational training is clear- it is something that young people in the state need, and this is something we have also experienced in Europe, especially in Germany,' he added.
Karen Jensen, representative of the German Ambassador, also praised Gov. Zulum for his all-inclusive approach to empowerment, highlighting the significant number of women participating in vocational training programs.
'It's important for women and girls to be part of vocational education.
'I'm proud of what I'm seeing here, and our cooperation work is very nice,' Jensen said.
The European Union has reiterated its commitment to partnering with the Borno State Government in peace-building projects, including those implemented by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).
The EU's efforts align with its Gender Action Plan III, which aims to promote gender equality and empower women and girls worldwide.
