The Borno State Police Command has announced the arrest of two suspected car thieves and the recovery of three stolen vehicles in Maiduguri.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the command's spokesman, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, the operation was carried out under the directive of the commissioner of police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, following a distress call received on July 8, 2025.

The report indicated the theft of a grey Mercedes Benz C180 at the Innovative Area, Pompomari Bypass in Maiduguri.

He said acting swiftly, officers intensified patrols, leading to the interception of the stolen vehicle two days later in the Bolori area.

The vehicle was found in the possession of one Umar Muhammed, 34.

During interrogation, Umar confessed that he received the vehicle from his accomplice, Abubakar Sadiq, 18, who allegedly stole it from where it was parked.

ASP Daso added that a subsequent search at their residence in Bolori led to the discovery of two additional Mercedes Benz C180s and five different vehicle plate numbers.

The suspects admitted they are part of a syndicate that specializes in stealing vehicles, dismantling them, and selling the parts.

He confirmed that the suspects are currently in custody while investigations continue.

Police have urged members of the public who may have lost vehicles to visit the Crack Squad Unit of the Borno State Police Command with valid proof of ownership for verification and possible reclamation.

The command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and assured residents of sustained efforts to curb criminal activities across the state.
