The ongoing construction of the Borno State Teaching Hospital, a flagship project of the Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum administration, is set to transform access to healthcare services for women and children across the state and the North East region.
Located along the Maiduguri-Damaturu Road, the hospital will provide high-quality and affordable medical services while serving as a training centre for medical students from Kashim Ibrahim University, formerly Borno State University (BOSU).
During an inspection of the site on August 4, 2025, Gov. Zulum reiterated his commitment to improving healthcare delivery, noting that the hospital will help reduce medical tourism.
The 400-bed hospital features 15 specialized departments and will be equipped with modern medical technology, including a 5-megawatt solar power system to ensure uninterrupted electricity, a key component needed in the maternity wards, neonatal units, and emergency departments.
Healthcare professionals have highlighted the significance of the project in improving maternal and child health indicators.
The hospital's departments dedicated to obstetrics, gynaecology, paediatrics, and emergency care will enhance the availability of timely and quality care for women and children, especially in rural and underserved communities.
The hospital is expected to create over 1,000 skilled jobs upon completion, offering employment opportunities for health professionals, including female doctors, nurses, and midwives.
The construction is currently employing between 2,000 and 3,000 workers, contributing to local economic activity and indirectly supporting households across the state.
Gov. Zulum said that the hospital is expected to be fully operational by the end of September 2025.
