Communities around the Lake Chad basin continue to face serious security threats as insurgents exploit porous borders to regroup and launch cross-border attacks.
The persistent activities of Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters have forced thousands of residents to flee their homes, disrupted farming, and slowed down regional recovery efforts.
In response to these challenges, Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum on Wednesday embarked on a strategic working visit to Diffa in the Niger Republic.
The visit aimed to strengthen joint security efforts and deepen collaboration between Nigerian and Nigerien authorities in the ongoing fight against insurgency.
Diffa, located just 17 kilometers from Damasak town in northern Borno, currently shelters thousands of Nigerians displaced by years of violence.
Governor Zulum was received by the Governor of Diffa, Brigadier General Mahamaduo Ibrahim Bagadoma, and other senior Nigerien officials.
During a closed-door meeting, both leaders discussed plans for joint patrols, intelligence sharing, and coordinated operations to sustain recent security gains achieved around the Lake Chad region.
He also revealed plans to support the safe return of thousands of displaced farmers to the fertile lands around Dutchi town as security improves.
He said restoring farming activities is vital for rebuilding livelihoods, improving food security, and reducing dependence on humanitarian aid.
