Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan, representing Borno Central, has obtained his Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms to join the Borno State governorship race under the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Sen. Lawan picked up the forms on Wednesday afternoon at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja.

His move comes a day after the immediate past commissioner of works and housing, Engr. Mustapha Gubio, also obtained his forms.

Gubio is widely regarded as the anointed aspirant of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum.

The development has further heightened political tension in the state.

Some party stakeholders alleged that Sen. Lawan is the preferred candidate of Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Both Gubio and Lawan are prominent APC figures in Borno. Gubio served in Zulum’s cabinet, while Lawan currently represents Borno Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly and is a former Borno State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice.

With two heavyweights now in the race, political observers say the contest for the APC governorship ticket in Borno is set to be fiercely contested ahead of the party’s primaries.
