The Borno State Police Command has issued a public advisory following a recent rise in incidents involving Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) across the state.

In the advisory released on Wednesday, May 7, 2026, the command called on residents to remain vigilant and security conscious at all times, particularly in crowded public spaces such as markets, motor parks, schools, and places of worship.

The police specifically warned residents to pay close attention to suspicious or unattended objects.

These include power banks, abandoned bags, nylon packages, parcels, and any other unusual items left in public areas, which could pose serious security threats.

'Members of the public are urged not to touch, move, or tamper with any suspicious item,' the statement said.

Instead, citizens should immediately report such items to the nearest police station or contact the command through the emergency lines provided: 0806 807 5581 and 0802 347 3293.

Security agencies have repeatedly cautioned that IEDs are often concealed in everyday objects to avoid detection.

The command’s latest alert comes as part of ongoing efforts to prevent attacks and protect lives in Borno, a state that has faced persistent security challenges for over a decade.

Residents are also encouraged to cooperate with security personnel and share timely information that could help avert potential threats.

For emergencies, the public can reach the Borno State Police Command on the numbers listed above.
