Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has decried poor management and lack of commitment by the leadership of the Federal College of Education (FCE), Gwoza, despite the state government committing over N200 million in take-off grants and fully rehabilitating the college site.

The governor expressed his disappointment when he paid a visit to the college on Thursday.

He said the management had failed to show the urgency and dedication needed to activate academic activities at the institution.

The college, formerly Teachers College Gwoza and owned by Borno State Government, was remodelled to include over 100 upgraded classrooms, modern laboratories, improved administrative facilities, and staff quarters for principal officers.

Gov. Zulum had approved N200 million as a take-off package, allocated the site in July 2023, and ordered its complete rehabilitation.

He also provided a housing estate with about 12 units of two-bedroom houses for teachers, and later commissioned additional staff quarters to address accommodation and staff retention gaps.

Despite the investments, the college management is yet to make concrete commitments for full commencement of academic programmes.

The governor said the institution was established about three years ago and principal officers, including the provost, were appointed, but there has been little progress.

'I am not happy, because this college was established about three years ago and the principal officers were appointed, especially the provost, but to my dismay, he cannot even install a 5 kVA solar power system at his office. The office is ghostly, none of them is here, an indication that there is no commitment to move this college forward.

'Borno State Government will not fold its arms and look at them, we shall do all it can to make sure this school functions well. We have provided N200 million as a take-off grant, and we have renovated almost all the buildings in the college,' he explained.

He added that it was clear there was no commitment from the principal officers to drive the process and ensure academic activities commence.

'We will now forward our findings to the federal ministry of education on how we can change some of the principal officers so that academic activities can resume in this school,' Gov. Zulum said.

FCE Gwoza was established to address the shortage of qualified teachers in Borno and the North-East, following years of insurgency that destroyed many schools and displaced teachers.
