A devastating canoe accident in Dikwa, Borno State, has claimed the lives of four females, including three children, leaving families and communities in mourning.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, the spokesman of Borno State Police Command, the incident took place on Monday.
According to him, the victims, all from Bulabulin Ward, Dikwa, were identified as Ya Mallum Shettima, an adult female from Marte LGA, Maimuna Akura (10 year old), Umira Alhaji Bulama (6 year old), and Yagana Bulama Kawu (5 months old).
ASP Daso said the canoe, carrying passengers, submerged in floodwaters in the Bakassi community between Mafa and Dikwa along Maiduguri Road on September 23, 2024.
The victims were rushed to Dikwa General Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
Their bodies have been released to their families for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
