Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has requested an additional N61 billion to the state's 2024 budget to address the devastating floods that hit the region on September 10.

The floods displaced nearly 2 million people and severely damaged critical infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and public facilities.

The budget increase, presented to the Borno State House of Assembly by Speaker Abdulkarim Lawan, would bring the state's total budget to N419.7 billion.

A significant portion will be allocated to emergency relief and humanitarian aid for flood victims.

Gov. Zulum emphasized the urgency of the situation, stressing that additional funds are essential to rebuild communities and provide vital support to those affected.

The flood submerged homes, farmlands, and businesses, leaving thousands homeless and without access to basic necessities like food, clean water, and medical care.

The governor's budget request includes provisions for supporting farmers and funding health services to prevent waterborne diseases in displacement camps.

The Borno State House of Assembly expressed support for the governor's request, commending his swift action.

With more rains expected, the urgency of Gov. Zulum's appeal cannot be overstated.

The governor stressed the need for short-term emergency aid and long-term planning to mitigate future disasters.
