Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has pledged to combat poverty in the region through targeted support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

The governor made this announcement on Tuesday during his visit to Coplad Nigeria Ltd., a rice milling factory on the Maiduguri-Bama Road Highway.

Acknowledging the devastating impact of the insurgency on local communities, Gov. Zulum affirmed his administration’s commitment to reviving the economy by empowering local businesses.

'The ministry of commerce should look into the problems of this company and make some recommendations so that the government can support them.

'One of the priorities of this administration is the provision of support to SMEs in the state,' Gov. Zulum said.

Since taking office, the governor has led a series of economic initiatives designed to strengthen SMEs across the state.

In 2022, he approved N814 million to support 9,154 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

A year earlier, his administration provided N900 million to 13,500 SMEs across Biu, Gwoza, Ngala, and Jere Local Government Areas.

In addition, N350 million was distributed to 4,250 artisans and traders in Maiduguri and Jere to foster economic resilience in the metropolitan area.

To further stimulate economic growth, Gov. Zulum implemented a transportation subsidy program in 2021, distributing 100 Toyota taxis and 500 Keke NAPEP (tricycles) in Maiduguri at 50% subsidized repayment, along with 40 cars and 40 KeKe NAPEP in Biu.

The governor also provided N350.15 million for various trades and sectors.

During his recent visit, he directed the ministry of commerce to assess Coplad Ltd.’s challenges and make recommendations for government support.

To further aid production, he instructed the ministry of agriculture to supply the factory with locally grown paddy rice.

Emphasizing sustainable growth, the governor urged the factory management to maintain consistent production.

'I want to assure you that we will give you all the necessary support, but I don't want to see a situation in which your company resumes work and then stops after some days. Let's look into both short-term and long-term sustainable solutions that will ensure the consistent functionality of this factory,

'With your experience, I want you to look beyond this one, setting up other modular ones so we can create as many jobs as possible.' he explained.

The governor’s efforts align with his broader mission to promote economic stability and reduce poverty in Borno State.

'We want to ensure that people not only have jobs but a steady source of income. Economic stability is crucial for lasting peace in our communities,' he added.

Gov. Zulum’s SME initiatives are seen as essential steps toward rebuilding Borno’s economy, providing hope and opportunity for communities recovering from years of conflict.
