Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has commissioned and handed over a newly constructed 42-room patients’ apartment to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), the latest in a series of interventions aimed at improving healthcare delivery in the state.
The facility, built by the Borno State Government, is designed to provide comfortable accommodation for patients’ relatives and visitors, many of whom travel long distances to access specialist care at the hospital.
Speaking during the handover on Tuesday Gov. Zulum said the project reflects his administration’s commitment to making healthcare accessible and patient-friendly.
The 42-room lodge is the latest support to UMTH.
The governor had earlier presented a N100 million cheque to address funding gaps for medical consumables and other hospital needs.
He also constructed 24 three-bedroom apartments for medical staff to address housing shortages and ensure doctors live closer to patients.
In addition, Gov. Zulum approved the release of N1 billion to facilitate kidney transplant and maternal health services at UMTH.
Following the 2024 flood disaster, he also provided a N500 million intervention to the hospital.
The Chief Medical Director of UMTH, Prof. Ahmed Ahidjo, expressed gratitude to the governor for his consistent support.
'On behalf of the management and staff of UMTH, we thank His Excellency for these interventions. From accommodation for relatives, to housing for staff, to direct financial support, the Borno State Government has been a dependable partner,' Prof. Ahidjo said.
Beyond UMTH, Gov. Zulum has extended support to other federal institutions in Borno.
He approved hundreds of millions in takeoff grants for the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Azare; Federal Polytechnic, Monguno; and Federal College of Education, Gwoza.
He also constructed housing quarters and provided infrastructure at the University of Maiduguri.
The governor also distributed thousands of patrol vehicles to security agencies across the state to boost security.
