The Unique Care Support Foundation (CASFOD), in collaboration with UNICEF, organized a plenary sitting of the Borno State Children Parliament to commemorate World Children's Day.
The plenary took place on Wednesday at State Assembly Complex, Maiduguri.
This event marked the global day of action for children, by children, highlighting the importance of child rights and promoting international togetherness and awareness among children worldwide.
World Children's Day is celebrated annually on November 20, marking the adoption of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child by the UN General Assembly in 1959 and the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.
This day emphasizes the importance of protecting and fulfilling children's rights worldwide.
The event was attended by notable figures, including the commissioner for women affairs and social development and representatives from Save the Children among others.
CASFOD Executive Director, Mr. Benjamin John, expressed gratitude to the state assembly, stakeholders, and partners for their support.
He emphasized the parliament's role in advocating for the full implementation of the Child Protection Law in Borno State.
Motions were moved and adopted, particularly focusing on child protection.
UNICEF Chief of Borno Field Office, Dr. Gerida Birukila, commended the Borno State House of Assembly for passing the landmark Child Protection Law.
He encouraged the children to think creatively to solve problems affecting vulnerable children and assured them of UNICEF's continued support.
Dr. Birukila also challenged the children to document their ideas on how to solve the challenges around them, noting that 'the sky is your starting point' and that 'everything is possible.'
He reiterated UNICEF's commitment to standing with every child in Borno State and North East Nigeria.
As a non-governmental organization established in 2019, CASFOD focuses on supporting children in emergencies, particularly in education, protection, nutrition, WASH, and health in North East and North Western Nigeria.
The Borno State Children Parliament provides a platform for children to raise their voices on issues affecting them.
By advocating for their rights and promoting awareness, these young leaders are shaping a brighter future for themselves and their communities.
