The Borno State Government has unveiled plans to enhance agricultural production and food security in the state, with the ministry of agriculture and natural resources receiving a substantial allocation of N20,897,000,000.00 in the 2025 budget.
Building on the significant strides made in 2024, the government aims to further strengthen the agricultural sector in the 2025 fiscal year.
In 2024, the state government made notable progress in the agricultural sector. The government distributed seeds, fertilizers, and agricultural equipment to over 70,000 farmers, enabling them to improve their crop yields and productivity.
According to the government, it invested in modern farming equipment to boost mechanization and productivity. Irrigation infrastructure was also expanded through borehole drilling and water pump installations, allowing farmers to cultivate their lands more efficiently.
In the budget, the government improved livestock breeding and production techniques, implemented strategies to minimize post-harvest losses, and established mega farms for various crops.
For the 2025 fiscal year, the government plans to expand irrigation through the implementation of large-scale irrigation projects.
This will enable more farmers to cultivate their lands throughout the year, regardless of the season. The government will also distribute high-quality seeds to farmers, providing them with the necessary inputs to improve their crop yields.
Also in the budget, to reduce the financial burden on farmers, the government will provide subsidized fertilizers, enabling them to purchase these essential inputs at a lower cost. The government will also enhance grain storage facilities, strengthening grain reserves and reducing post-harvest losses.
The government will encourage large-scale farming practices, promoting economic growth and food security. It will also invest in firgi farming, expanding this practice to supplement food production and improve food security.
To achieve these goals, the government is committed to ensuring that the allocated funds are utilized efficiently and effectively.
This investment is expected to have a significant impact on the state's agricultural sector, improving food security and economic growth.
