The Borno State Police Command have uncovered the involvement of a victim's nephew in a foiled kidnapping attempt.
According to a statement issued on Friday evening by the command's spokesman, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, the victim, Alhaji Shetima Batari, had previously reported an assault that set the stage for a ransom demand, only to discover that a close family member was behind the plot.
He said the incident began on December 25, 2024, when Batari, a resident of Shuwari Ward in Damboa Local Government Area, was attacked in his home by assailants who left him with injuries to his head, neck, and hand.
After receiving medical treatment, Batari reported the attack to the Damboa Police Station.
He added that the case escalated when Batari received a threatening phone call on January 1, 2025, demanding a ransom of Two Million Naira (N2,000,000) in exchange for his safety.
'The police swiftly launched an investigation, which led to the arrest of two suspects: Modu Aji, 23, Batari's nephew, and Ramat Kolo, 22.
'Further investigation revealed that Aji had conspired with other individuals to orchestrate the attack. Kachala Garba, 25, was arrested after confessing to being part of the plot, which was allegedly orchestrated by a man named Alhaji Bako.
'Garba disclosed that they had been paid N40,000 to harm Batari, with the involvement of Buba Abana, who remains at large,' ASP Daso explained.
He assured that the police are continuing their investigation and are actively seeking the remaining suspects.
ASP Daso urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to ensure the safety of the community.
