The Borno State Government has warned residents of Maiduguri to be cautious of possible secondary explosions following a fire incident at the Giwa Barracks ammunition facility.

The fire, which occurred on April 30, 2025, at 10:30 pm, caused some munitions to explode, resulting in loud bangs that were heard across the city.

According to a statement from ministry of information and internal security, a combined team of fire services from the Nigerian Army, Federal Fire Service, and Borno State Fire Service successfully put out the fire.

Similarly, the Borno State Police Command confirmed that the incident was not as a result of an enemy attack, but rather a friendly-fire incident within the barracks.

The police command said preliminary investigations indicate that the detonation originated from within the barracks, and security forces, EOD experts, and the fire service are currently on the scene working to mitigate the situation.

The police command also assured the public that the security situation remains firmly under control and urged residents to remain calm, as the situation is under control.

While the situation is currently under control, both the government and police warned that there may be secondary explosions that could disturb the neighborhood.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the intense heat in Maiduguri may have triggered the fire.

Residents are advised to stay alert and follow further updates from the authorities.
