Residents of Maiduguri have been warned not to drink water from the public supply due to potential odour and colour issues following recent flood damage to the city's water infrastructure.
Commissioner of water resources, Engr. Tijjani Alkali Goni, issued the cautionary statement on Sunday.
He announced that while partial repairs have been completed on the main water distribution network, the water being pumped from Monday, June 30, 2025, may not be safe for consumption.
The ministry said the water should not be consumed until they advise otherwise.
'The general public are hereby advised not to use the water for drinking; it comes with odour and color until advised by the ministry,' Engr. Tijjani said.
Recall, the last year's flooding severely damaged key water distribution channels, disrupting supply to parts of the city.
Although repair work is ongoing, the ministry emphasized that the resumption of pumping services is only a partial solution, and full water quality restoration will take additional time.
Residents are advised to rely on alternative sources of clean drinking water and stay informed through official updates.
