A heavy downpour in the early hours of Friday led to flooding in some parts of Potiskum Local Government Area of Yobe State.
According to a report by the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA), more than ten areas were affected by the flood.
The affected areas include Old Prison, Filin Mashe, Unguwar Makafi, Unguwar Jaje Bakin Kwari, Afghanistan, Tsangaya, Karofi, Bayan Garejin Dan Juma, Jigawa Bayan, Makarahuta, and Tandari.
YOSEMA reported that Governor Mai Mala Buni has directed an immediate response to the situation.
'We have received emergency alert on a heavy downpour in Potiskum in the early hours of 15th August 2025. We have since activated our field team,' the report read.
Fortunately, no lives have been lost so far.
YOSEMA stated that a detailed assessment is ongoing, and the government will ensure life-saving support, protection, and response are provided immediately.
The impact of the flood has been significant with the flood having submerged houses, farmlands among others, forcing residents, especially women and children, to flee for safety.
It's worth noting that Yobe State was identified as one of 31 states at high risk of flooding by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in July 2024.
