The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) has appointed Professor Abubakar Mu’azu, a board member of Lake Chad Times Newspaper, as the pioneer Dean of its newly created Faculty of Communication and Media Studies (FCM).
The appointment was approved by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mohammed Laminu Mele, on Friday.
Prof. Mu’azu will serve in an acting capacity for an initial six-month term, effective from September 9, 2025, with possible renewal subject to performance, according to a letter signed by the university registrar, Ahmad Lawan.
As dean, he will oversee the day-to-day administration of the faculty and report directly to the Vice-Chancellor.
The faculty, established by the University Senate on July 31, 2025, aims to serve as a comprehensive hub for media education. It comprises seven departments:
--Mass Communication
--Journalism and Media Studies
--Broadcasting
--Public Relations
--Advertising
--Development Communication
--Multimedia and Film Studies
Prof. Mu’azu, a renowned communication scholar with expertise in media and peace studies, brings a wealth of administrative experience.
He has previously served as Director of the Centre for Peace, Diplomatic and Development Studies (CPDDS), Director of Remedial Studies, and Sub-dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences.
