Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has approved a new scholarship scheme for 220 lecturers at the University of Maiduguri to pursue Doctor of Philosophy programs.

The announcement came shortly after the governor received an honorary Doctor of Science degree during the university’s 25th combined convocation ceremony on Saturday.

The convocation also marked the relaunch of the UNIMAID Endowment Fund, which the institution hopes will strengthen research and development.

Gov. Zulum said the scholarship will support 200 Borno indigenes and 20 non-indigenes.

He explained that 100 beneficiaries will study abroad while 120 will study in Nigerian universities.

‘I wish to announce the scholarship to 220 lecturers of University of Maiduguri to pursue their doctorate degree,’ he said.

‘Out of the number, 100 will have the opportunity to study abroad while 120 will study in universities within Nigeria.’

‘As part of our contribution to the growth and development of this University, I will like to announce that 20 non indigene lecturers will also be given the opportunity to pursue their doctorate degrees,’ Gov. Zulum stated.

He expressed gratitude for the recognition, noting he was honored to be named alongside Emir of Kazaure Najib Hussaini Adamu and philanthropist Emeka Offor.

He said all recipients are expected to serve as good ambassadors of the institution.

The governor praised the university for its contribution to national development, saying UNIMAID has produced graduates who now serve across government and the private sector.

He endorsed the relaunch of the Endowment Fund as a necessary step to boost the university’s research capacity.

‘The University is justified in re-launching their Endowment Fund, so that they can mobilise resources to enhance their research and development capabilities. For us in Borno State, partnership with University has become a way of life,’ he said.

He commended the chief launcher, Alhaji Muhammadu Indimi, and called on alumni and other well-meaning individuals to contribute generously.

The ceremony was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Governor of Adamawa State Ahmodu Umaru Fintiri, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, deputy governor of Yobe State Idi Barde Gubana, and the Shehu of Borno Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Elkanemi among others.
