In the early hours of Saturday, troops of the Nigerian Army have thwarted a coordinated midnight assault by over 300 terrorists targeting communities around Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State.
The attack, which began at approximately 02:50 a.m., was repelled through swift intelligence, tactical maneuvering, and superior firepower deployed by the 28 Task Force Brigade.
According to a statement on Saturday evening by the military, units on high alert detected enemy movement early, allowing them to assume battle positions and engage the insurgents from multiple fronts.
The statement said the ensuing firefight lasted more than two hours, during which the soldiers held firm and prevented the militants from breaching the security perimeter of the adjoining towns.
As daylight approached, the terrorists began a disorderly withdrawal toward the Azir axis of the Sambisa Forest, attempting to cross the main supply route between Damboa and Biu.
In response, the 25 Brigade was tasked with occupying pre‑designated ambush positions near Azir Bridge to cut off and neutralize the fleeing fighters, supported by guidance from a Nigerian Army Unmanned Aerial Vehicle.
The statement added that the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI deployed a Super Tucano aircraft, and as interdiction forces closed in, the insurgents dispersed.
Troops subsequently disrupted their retreat, and no Nigerian personnel or equipment were lost in the operation.
Exploitation operations in and around Chibok remain ongoing.
The Nigerian Army has assured the public that concerted efforts are being intensified to track down escaping elements and deny them freedom of movement.
Footage of the mass withdrawal of terrorists after the failed attack has been obtained and is being analyzed for further operational action.
The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to defending the nation’s territorial integrity and ensuring the safety of all citizens.
