The Borno State Police Command has dismissed a viral voice note circulating on social media that claimed a woman attempted to kidnap a child in Maiduguri.
According to a statement on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, the report being shared on WhatsApp alleged that the unidentified woman was caught behind Bayan Quarters area while trying to abduct a child.
The message also claimed that the woman was beaten and later handed over to ITE Police Division, where other kidnapped children were allegedly found in her possession.
ASP Daso described the information as false and misleading, stating that no such incident occurred within Maiduguri or any part of the state.
‘The command wishes to categorically debunk this false and misleading information, as no such incident occurred within Maiduguri or any part of the state,’ he said.
He urged residents to disregard the viral audio and warned those spreading fake news to stop immediately or face legal consequences under the Nigeria Cybercrime Act.
‘While the command remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents, it strongly warns mischief makers and peddlers of fake news to desist forthwith or face the full wrath of the law,’ he said.
The command further advised the public to verify all information through its official communication channels and trusted media outlets.
