President Bola Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 30,000 new police officers.

The move is part of a major security overhaul that includes withdrawing all police officers currently assigned to protect Very Important Persons (VIPs).

The announcement was made on Sunday in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

The directive was issued during a high-level security meeting on Sunday.

The withdrawal of police from VIP security details is intended to redeploy thousands of officers to core police duties in communities across the nation.

The goal is to strengthen security in areas where a limited police presence has hindered public safety, particularly in remote regions.

According to the statement, VIPs who require armed security will now need to request personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The federal government is also collaborating with state governments to upgrade police training facilities nationwide.

Sunday's security meeting was attended by the heads of the Army, Air Force, Police, and the Department of State Services (DSS).
