Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, said on Wednesday that Boko Haram no longer poses the same level of threat it once did, despite the recent rise in attacks across the state.
The governor made the comment during a meeting with the Chief of Army Staff, Shuaibu Waidi, at the Government House in Maiduguri.
He said the state was experiencing more intense violence in previous years and noted that the recent incidents, while troubling, do not compare to what the state had endured at the height of the insurgency.
He said this context is important to avoid public fear and to maintain trust in the ongoing military operations.
The governor urged residents to strengthen cooperation with security agencies.
He said community intelligence remains a decisive factor in preventing attacks and stabilizing the state.
‘Yes, we have witnessed a series of attacks on our communities and the security forces, but the worst is over,’ Gov. Zulum said.
He added that the government will continue to support the military with timely intelligence to ‘bring this madness to an end.’
He said the earlier years of the conflict saw overwhelming attacks across multiple communities, unlike the present situation, which he described as a sign that the state is on a path toward lasting stability.
He commiserated with the Nigerian Army over the recent tactical setbacks and praised the soldiers for their resilience and sacrifice.
‘On behalf of the government and people of Borno State, I wish to reiterate that we stand with the officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Armed Forces,’ he said.
‘We will not take their sacrifice for granted.’
The Chief of Army Staff, Waidi, thanked Zulum for his support to the military.
He said the Army headquarters will continue to provide logistics and other resources needed to strengthen operations across the theatre.
‘We appreciate your support in Borno,’ Waidi said.
‘From the Army headquarters, we will provide all the necessary resources needed to ensure the troops achieve their mission.’
