Fasting for the month of Ramadan will commence on Wednesday after the crescent moon wasreported sighted in Nigeria.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by Abubakar Garbai El-Kanemi, Shehu of Borno.
The confirmation signals the start of the 1447 AH Ramadan fast for Muslims nationwide.
Muslims across Nigeria are therefore expected to begin the dawn-to-sunset fast on Wednesday in observance of one of the five pillars of Islam.
Ramadan is observed as a sacred period of fasting, prayer, reflection, and charity.
The holy month also commemorates the revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad.
The fasting period will last 29 or 30 days depending on the lunar calendar.
