A total of 84 graduands of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), took the oath and attestation as Doctors of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) on Wednesday morning.
The ceremony, held at the Muhammadu Indimi International Conference Centre, UNIMAID, marked the 36th attestation and oath-taking event for 2024/2025 DVM graduates.
It was organised by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, UNIMAID, in collaboration with the Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN).
Acting Registrar of the VCN, Dr Oladotun Fadipe, administered the oath to the graduands.
He urged them to be good ambassadors of the institution, welcomed them into the profession, and wished them a fruitful journey ahead.
Vice President of the VCN, Prof. Halima Gambo, who delivered the President’s remarks, described the oath as a covenant and 'a sacred trust.'
She said the graduands were now 'guardians of the intricate bond between human, animal and environmental health.'
'You are declaring to the world that you are now guardians of the intricate bond between human, animal and environmental health. When you swear to protect animal health and relieve animal suffering, you are swearing to be the voice for the voiceless,' she said.
Prof. Gambo, who also serves as Chairperson of the Faculty Ceremonial Committee, explained the VCN’s threefold role: regulating veterinary education and practice, maintaining the register of qualified surgeons, and serving as arbiters of ethics.
She charged the new doctors to shun quackery, reject fake drugs, embrace continuous learning, and collaborate with all stakeholders.
'The Veterinary Council of Nigeria will watch your careers with great expectations. We will not compromise on our mandate,' she added.
Vice Chancellor of UNIMAID, Prof. Mohammed Laminu Mele, who served as chief host, congratulated the new doctors and wished them well.
Awards were given to the best graduating students.
