Stakeholders in Borno State are pushing for a female Divisional Police Officer (DPO) to be appointed, aiming to strengthen community trust and promote gender sensitivity in policing.

The call was made by the Executive Director of Women in the New Nigeria and Youth Empowerment Initiative (WINN), Comrade Lucy Dlama Yunana during the National Police Day celebration in Maiduguri, attended by the Borno State Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid and other security stakeholders.

According to her, female DPO would encourage more women and vulnerable groups to report cases confidently.

She urged youths to remain law-abiding and avoid violence.

Lucy added that mothers and women groups would intensify community sensitization campaigns.

'We as mothers, we're going out on the streets within the community to make sensitization for them so that they will be aware of the danger,' she said.

The CP acknowledged the request, saying it aligns with efforts to promote women's participation in policing.

'The request is in frontline,' he said, assuring a safe environment for female officers.

'We recognize the effort of the women police and will ensure a safe ground for them,' he assured.

He also called on community leaders to intensify sensitization against political thuggery ahead of elections, emphasizing peaceful participation.

The Chairman of Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Ali Bolori said enlightenment campaigns are ongoing, with traditional leaders supporting peace efforts.

'We have our Lawans, Bulamas and others here. We'll try our best to see they make it well,' he assured.
