Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, and World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, Dr. Ndiame Diop, have embarked on a joint site visit to assess the damage caused by the devastating floods that hit the state in September.
Dr. Diop was in the state on Monday for a two-day working visit, during which he met with state officials and inspected key infrastructure projects.
The inspection tour focused on the damaged Fori Bridge and the Alau Dam, both of which are crucial for the region's economy and the well-being of its residents.
Gov. Zulum expressed deep concern over the extent of the damage, emphasizing the urgent need for reconstruction and flood mitigation measures.
He appealed to the World Bank for increased support to address the immediate and long-term consequences of the floods.
The governor's plea for support is not unfounded, as the recent floods have exposed deeper systemic issues, including poverty, environmental degradation, and inadequate infrastructure.
Dr. Diop assured the Governor of the World Bank's continued commitment to supporting Borno State's development efforts.
He acknowledged the state's proactive approach to recovery and pledged to expedite ongoing projects and explore additional support for critical sectors such as agriculture, education, and healthcare.
The World Bank's support is crucial, as the state's infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and dams, has been severely damaged, affecting the livelihoods of residents.
The partnership aims to create a more resilient Borno State, capable of withstanding future natural disasters.
