Borno State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Sainna Buba, has disclosed that the state government spends almost N100 million monthly to finance the activities of the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, in the state.
He made the disclosure on Saturday during the decoration and awards ceremony for RRS officers at the squad’s headquarters in Maiduguri.
According to him, the RRS is a joint task force made up of personnel from the police and other security agencies operating together to curb gangsterism and other criminal activities, commonly referred to as 'anti-social vices', across the state.
'Security is the first priority of every government. Spending this much is yielding results because criminal activities have reduced drastically in the state since the RRS came into operation,' the commissioner said.
He noted that issues such as phone snatching and gangsterism, which were once rampant in Maiduguri and other parts of the state, have now reduced significantly.
However, Hon. Buba listed Kaleri, Railway Bayan Quarters and Old Maiduguri as areas where criminal activities are beginning to rise again. He called the attention of the squad to the three areas and urged them to step up patrols and surveillance to check the trend.
He commended the RRS team for their dedication and urged them to do more in protecting lives and property.
The highlight of the ceremony was the promotion of 63 RRS personnel and the presentation of awards to officers recognized for outstanding service.
The commissioner congratulated the promoted officers and awardees, charging them to live up to expectations.
'Much is expected from you. Continue to serve with diligence and professionalism,' he said.
The RRS was set up by the Borno State Government as part of efforts to strengthen internal security and complement the fight against insurgency and street crime.
