A new primary healthcare centre currently under construction in Maiwa, Mafa Local Government Area, is part of Borno’s resettlement drive for returning internally displaced persons, IDPs.

The development was disclosed by Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum on Sunday during an inspection of ongoing resettlement housing in Amarwa and Maiwa.

He also announced plan to close the Konduga IDP camp, following the successful shutdown of the Bama camp and the planned closure of the Gwoza camp.

The governor emphasized that the resettlement will be voluntary.

'We are here to discuss with the IDPs so that in the next four months they can be resettled with dignity. Return will be voluntary, not by force,' he said.

In Maiwa, the state government is building large housing units alongside a primary healthcare centre, water facility, and other basic amenities.

PHCs in communities are frequently accessed by women, children, and the elderly, as they are often the most vulnerable groups in every society.

The location of the Maiwa PHC within the resettlement city is therefore expected to benefit these groups most by providing timely care without traveling long distances.

In Amarwa, Konduga Local Government Area where the foundation was earlier laid, a new resettlement city is also being developed to accommodate displaced persons currently in camps.

He added that the facilities are designed to ensure returnees, especially vulnerable households, have access to shelter, healthcare, water, and other essential services.

With dignity and consent as guiding principles, the government says the resettlement process will prioritize access to basic services.
