The Commissioner of Police, Borno State Command, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, has reaffirmed the command's commitment to ensuring a peaceful electoral process in the state.
CP Abdulmajid said this on Wednesday when he received a delegation of the 'Borno Know Your Candidates' initiative at the Command Headquarters in Maiduguri.
The delegation comprised representatives of Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, the National Orientation Agency, NOA, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and other critical stakeholders.
According to a statement issued by the command's spokesman, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, the engagement was aimed at strengthening collaboration between the police and relevant stakeholders in promoting peaceful electoral activities, enhancing civic participation, preventing political thuggery and mitigating the risk of electoral violence ahead of forthcoming elections.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Ambassador Ahmed Shehu, Head of Delegation, explained that the 'Borno Know Your Candidates' initiative seeks to strengthen civic engagement, promote informed voter participation, enhance public safety and create platforms for constructive dialogue between candidates and the electorate.
He emphasised the need for sustained collaboration with the police and other relevant institutions to identify potential threats early, discourage political violence and thuggery, and promote peaceful participation throughout the electoral process.
In his remarks, CP Abdulmajid commended the delegation for its proactive engagement and commitment to democratic participation and public safety.
He said peaceful elections require the collective responsibility of security agencies, political actors, civil society groups, the media, traditional and religious leaders, and the general public.
The commissioner reiterated the command's commitment to professionalism, impartiality and the protection of lives and property before, during and after electoral activities.
He stressed that the command would not tolerate acts of political thuggery, intimidation, violence or any conduct capable of threatening public peace, while urging all political actors and their supporters to operate strictly within the provisions of the law.
He further encouraged the stakeholders to sustain public enlightenment, promote issue-based political engagement and promptly share credible information on emerging security concerns with the appropriate authorities to enable timely preventive action.
