In response to the growing security challenges and in solidarity with the Borno State Government's peace initiative, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Borno State Chapter, has declared a one-day prayer and fasting program scheduled for Monday, May 19, 2025.
The call follows a statewide broadcast by the Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum on Saturday, who urged all faith communities to intercede for peace in Borno, the NorthEast, and the nation at large.
In a circular issued on Saturday, the Christian body emphasized the need for spiritual intervention in addressing the rise in insurgency and killings.
The statement also called for prayers for fallen soldiers and civilians who lost their lives in insurgent attacks, as well as comfort for their grieving families.
Quoting Leviticus 26:6, the statement assured that God’s promise of peace would prevail: 'I will grant peace in the land, and you will lie down and no one will make you afraid...'
The program will culminate in a unified prayer meeting at First Baptist Church, opposite the State Secretariat in Maiduguri, by 3:00PM. Church leaders have been urged to mobilize their members and actively participate in the solemn event.
CAN, under the leadership of Most Rev’d Dr. John Bogna Bakeni, reiterated its commitment to partnering with the government and other stakeholders to restore peace and healing across Borno and Nigeria.
'It’s our earnest prayer that as we pray, God in His infinite mercy shall heal our state and nation at large through Christ our Lord,' the statement concluded.
