Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has resigned his membership from the People's Democratic Party (PDP).

In a letter dated July 14, 2025, addressed to the Chairman of PDP, Jada 1 Ward, Jada LGA, Adamawa State, Atiku expressed gratitude for the opportunities given to him by the party, including serving two full terms as Vice President and twice contesting as its presidential candidate.

He described the decision as "heartbreaking" but said it was necessary due to the direction the party has taken in recent times, which he believes diverges from its foundational principles.

'It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognizing the irreconcilable differences that have emerged,' he stated in the letter, which has since been acknowledged and stamped as received on the same date.

Atiku wished the party and its leadership well, thanking them for the support and opportunities he enjoyed during his time as a member.

His resignation marks a significant moment in Nigeria’s political landscape, considering his role as a founding member of the PDP.
