The Borno State government has announced plans to relocate the Bulumkuttu 'Yan Nono traders to a safer and more structured market space.

The move is part of efforts to improve safety and restore order along major roads in Maiduguri.

For years, the Bulumkuttu 'Yan Nono area along Kano–Jos Road has been one of Maiduguri’s busiest commercial points, attracting hundreds of people daily for traditional milk products.

The market, originally designed for a limited number of traders, has grown beyond capacity, with many operating on the road shoulders and open spaces.

This expansion, according to the Borno Geographic Information Service (BOGIS), on Wednesday, has created safety risks and disrupted traffic flow, prompting the government’s decision to act.

During a meeting with the Bulumkuttu 'Yan Nono Market Association on Tuesday, November 4, BOGIS executive secretary Adam Bukar Bababe said the move was part of governor Babagana Umara Zulum’s broader plan to enhance urban management in Maiduguri.

Bababe said the relocation is not meant to displace traders but to provide a safer and more conducive business environment.

'The new market site will be properly structured with facilities that support your trade. Government is acting to protect lives and businesses,' he said.

He urged the traders’ leadership to submit a comprehensive list of all members, including those without existing shops, to ensure fair allocation at the new location.

Association chairman Husaini Ali welcomed the initiative, describing it as a step in the right direction for both safety and business growth.

'We have seen how crowded this place has become. Many of us operate close to the highway, and it is risky. We are ready to cooperate if the new market offers better conditions,' he said.

Similarly, association secretary Kabiru Abubakar expressed confidence that the government’s intervention would help improve order and sanitation around the area.

Some traders also appealed to the government to consider those currently operating under umbrellas when allocating new stalls.

The relocation of Bulumkuttu 'Yan Nono traders marks another phase in the government’s ongoing urban renewal drive aimed at addressing congestion, safety concerns, and environmental management across Maiduguri.
