Vulnerable girls and women in Borno State who missed formal education due to conflict and social challenges have received renewed hope with the commissioning of a remodelled Second Chance School in Biu Local Government Area.

Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, Governor of Borno State, inaugurated the facility on Thursday as part of efforts to expand access to education for women excluded from the conventional school system.

The school is designed to support adult women and girls who dropped out or never enrolled in school, providing them with opportunities for self-reliance.

The curriculum focuses on basic literacy and numeracy, skills acquisition, and digital knowledge aimed at improving livelihoods.

The Biu centre becomes the third Second Chance School established by the state government, following earlier centres in Maiduguri and Bama.

The governor said the initiative is targeted at rebuilding lives and restoring dignity to women affected by years of insurgency and displacement.

After the inauguration, he ordered the immediate employment of 200 youths from Biu to address unemployment and social vulnerability.

Gov. Zulum also announced the automatic employment of volunteer health workers during a visit to Biu Specialist Hospital, acknowledging their long service.

He inspected the ongoing construction of a 100-unit teachers’ housing estate, aimed at improving welfare and retention of teachers in public schools.
