The Nigerian Navy, in collaboration with Nigerian Army has cleared approximately 11 kilometres of waterways and insurgent hideouts in the Lake Chad Region.

Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, announced the development on Thursday at the Theatre Command, Headquarters of Joint Task Force (JTF) North East Operation Hadin Kai, in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The Naval Chief said that the military is making progress in its fight against insurgency in the Lake Chad shores.

'The troops are progressing and succeeding in the fight against insurgency in the shores of Lake Chad,' he said.

According to him, Nigerian Navy have successfully dredged and cleared approximately 11 kilometres of waterways, enhancing navigability and reopening previously inaccessible routes.

He said these efforts have facilitated the safe return of fishermen, farmers, traders, and transport operators, thereby supporting the gradual revival of socioeconomic activities across the region.

He added that these patrols are designed to disrupt terrorists' transit routes, prevent regrouping and reassure local communities.

The Lake Chad Region, known for fishing and farming, has been plagued by over a decade of insurgency, disrupting economic development.

Vice Admiral Abbas visited the state to assess operational activities of his troops and assured that necessary equipment and requirements would be provided to end terrorism in the Lake Chad Region.
