Residents of Maiduguri on Tuesday joined officers of the Borno State Police Command in a six-kilometre walk across parts of the city.
The walk turned the usually busy streets into a symbol of unity, trust, and shared responsibility for peace.
The walkathon, led by the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, formed part of activities marking the 2026 National Police Day.
It also aimed at strengthening relationships between security personnel and the communities they serve.
Starting from the Borno State Police Command Headquarters, participants moved through major routes up to Shehu's Palace before returning to the command headquarters.
Police officers walked alongside community stakeholders and members of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), creating moments of interaction rarely seen outside official security engagements.
For many residents who watched or joined briefly along the route, the exercise represented more than a ceremonial activity.
It offered an opportunity to see officers outside their traditional enforcement roles — walking, greeting citizens, and engaging directly with the public in a relaxed atmosphere.
Speaking during the exercise, CP Abdulmajid said effective policing depends largely on cooperation between law enforcement and the community.
He stressed that lasting peace and security can only be achieved when citizens and security agencies work together based on mutual trust and understanding.
'Sustainable peace and security can only be achieved through mutual trust, cooperation, and collective responsibility.' he said.
Participants described the walk as a confidence-building initiative capable of narrowing the gap between the police and the public, especially in a state recovering from years of insecurity.
The Borno State Police Command expressed appreciation to stakeholders and residents who participated.
Theyalso urge for continued collaboration to promote peace, safety, and development in the state.
