Borno State Government has announced plans to resettle 5,000 displaced people from five conflict-affected communities in Bama Local Government Area before the end of the current rainy season.
The targeted communities are Goniri, Bula Kuriye, Mayanti, Abbaram, and Darajamal, all of which have been depopulated over the years due to the Boko Haram insurgency.
The announcement was made during a visit to the Shehu of Bama, Dr. Umar ibn Kyari Umar Elkanemi on Saturday, where it was revealed that the initiative is aimed at enabling the returning IDPs to resume farming activities this cropping season.
'We are committed to resettling all displaced persons living in camps back to their communities,' said the Governor.
'Construction of 1,000 transitional shelters has started in Mayanti, Goniri, Bula Kuriye, and Abbaram, while Darajamal’s has been completed.'
The Governor, known for a strong focus on rehabilitation and recovery, added that trenches are being dug around the communities to enhance security for returnees.
'Our target is to ensure that they participate in this cropping season. Farming is our greatest treasure,' he said.
The move comes as thousands of displaced people in camps across Borno face uncertain futures, with overcrowded living conditions and limited economic opportunities. For many, returning home means regaining dignity, land, and a means to feed their families.
In a gesture to boost morale and security, logistics support has been provided to the military and Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) stationed in the area, and volunteers have been promised six months’ allowances.
'I stopped at the military formation in Banki Junction and directed intensified security efforts in Nguro Soye and surrounding areas,' the Governor added.
Welcoming the development, the Shehu of Bama praised the government’s commitment to restoring peace and resettling displaced citizens in their ancestral homes.
'We are grateful for the resettlement of the people of Darajamal. We look forward to seeing more of our people return,' he said.
The traditional ruler also appealed for increased support to members of the CJTF, who play a critical role in protecting farmlands and ensuring the safety of farmers during the rainy season.
