A devastating flood struck in the early hours of Thursday, destroying farmlands, houses, and displacing hundreds of people living in areas along the riverbanks in Maiduguri.

The affected communities, including Gwange Sabon Gari, saw water overrun homes, shops, and kiosks, forcing residents to flee for safety.

The flood has disproportionately affected women and children, who are often the most vulnerable in such situations. They face immense challenges, including lack of access to basic necessities like food, water, and shelter.

The risk of exploitation and abuse also increases, making it essential to prioritize their safety and well-being.

In an interview with our reporters who visited the area, a mother of five, who is also a victim, expressed her desperation, 'The water came with force and the force is increasing, we don't know where to go, we are just waiting for Allah's miracle and interventions.'

The flood has exacerbated existing health issues, particularly for pregnant women and those with young children. The unsanitary conditions and lack of medical care put them at risk of waterborne diseases and other health complications.

The nearby Kulogumna Primary School was also inundated, disrupting the education of hundreds of children. This flood has not only destroyed homes but also threatens the future of the affected children.

The situation demands swift emergency support from the government to relocate the victims, particularly women and children, who are most in need of assistance. Immediate action is necessary to address their needs and prevent further suffering.
