In response to the devastating flood crisis in Yobe State, the Northeast Development Commission (NEDC) has initiated a comprehensive drainage desiltation and evacuation operation across various Local Government Areas.

The project, launched earlier this week, aims to address the recurring and severe flooding that has severely impacted local communities, causing significant disruption to daily life and property damage.

According to NEDC's Managing Director and CEO, Mohammed G. Alkali, the project involves the clearance of an unprecedented 1 million meters of drainage systems, expected to alleviate flooding issues, create job opportunities, and promote healthier communities.

During an inspection in Maiduguri, Alkali emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, 'the consequences of global warming associated with flooding are worrisome and detrimental to human health. It is crucial for NEDC to collaborate with the six state governors in the region to ensure a safer environment.'

In Buni Yadi, the headquarters of Gujba LGA, the Yobe State Coordinator, Dr. Ali Abbas, oversaw the ongoing work at critical points, including the General Hospital and the State Low Cost area.

Represented by Ali Mai Gangaran, he revealed that the commission is working with the state ministry of environment, Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA), and local leaders to evacuate approximately 10,000 meters of drainage systems in Buni Yadi and Buni Gari towns, as part of the larger 1 million meter project.

The project will be extended to other local government areas, addressing the increasing impact of floods on residents, who face health risks and property damage due to inadequate drainage systems.

Yobe State has consistently been listed among the most flood-affected states in Nigeria, with recent reports indicating over 50,000 people displaced and several deaths recorded.

The state also needs intervention for survivors of frequent terrorist attacks.
