Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, met with aviation minister, Festus Keyamo in Abuja on Monday, pledging his administration's support for the upgrade of Muhammadu Buhari Airport in Maiduguri to international status.
This development is expected to boost economic growth in the northeast region, as Maiduguri serves as a gateway to countries surrounding Lake Chad and Central Africa.
Gov. Zulum emphasized the significance of this upgrade, noting that the northeast is the only geopolitical zone without a full international airport.
He assured Keyamo of the necessary political will to ensure the project's successful implementation.
The minister expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the upgrade and confirmed that the airport will begin operating as a full international airport on January 1, 2025.
All necessary preparations have been completed, and relevant government agencies have been informed, Keyamo confirmed.
During the visit, the governor was accompanied by prominent officials, including Senators Mohammed Ali Ndume, Mohammed Tahir Monguno, and Kaka Shehu Lawan, representing Borno South, North, and Central, respectively.
Other attendees included Borno APC Chairman Hon. Bello Ayuba and Deputy Speaker of Borno State House of Assembly, Engr Abdullahi Musa Askira.
The upgrade of Maiduguri International Airport is a significant step forward for the region, offering improved connectivity and economic opportunities.
With its strategic location, the airport is poised to become a vital hub for domestic and international travel.
