In a significant boost to the fight against insurgency in the North East region, the Borno State Commissioner of Police, CP Yusufu Mohammed Lawal, has commissioned a state-of-the-art Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) training school in Maiduguri.
The facility, donated by the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), UK Aid, and other partners, is the first of its kind in the region.
Located along the Wulari bypass in Maiduguri, the school was formally handed over to the police on Tuesday morning.
Representing the commissioner, Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP Ahmed Mohammed Bello expressed gratitude to the donors and assured that the facility will be utilized effectively to achieve its purpose.
The school have a water facility, solar-powered energy system, air conditioning, state-of-the-art equipment for EOD training and 60-bed capacity hostel.
The training school has already commenced operations with 60 personnel from the state, including divisional officers from all 38 divisions, members of strike forces.
According to CP, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members were going to be trained too.
The EOD training school is expected to play a critical role in enhancing the capacity of security personnel to combat insurgency in the North East region, which has been affected by the Boko Haram crisis for over a decade.
With this facility, the police and other security agencies will be better equipped to handle explosive devices, mines, and ordnance.
