Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has called on the Nigerian armed forces to take decisive action against Boko Haram insurgents, urging them to 'take the battle to the enemy' and prevent terrorists from regrouping and carrying out further attacks.
The governor made this plea during an expanded security meeting held on Tuesday at Government House Maiduguri, expressing concern over the escalating attacks in Borno State, particularly in Sabon Gari, Wajiroko, and Wulgo.
Gov. Zulum emphasized the need for aggressive military action and actionable intelligence to counter the insurgency.
'We should not grant breathing space to the terrorists to regroup, rearm and carry out attacks on our territory,' he said.
He believes that by engaging in relentless patrols, picketing, and decapitation missions, the troops can defeat and end the insurgency in time, allowing the state's recovery plan to progress without hindrance.
To effectively combat the insurgency, the governor is calling for an increased military presence in the NorthEast, particularly in Borno State, which shares borders with Chad, Cameroon, and the Republic of Niger.
He also stressed the importance of improved intelligence to counter the insurgency effectively and pledged to continue supporting the military and other security agencies in their efforts to combat insurgency.
The government has responded to the situation, with the Borno State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar, noting that the security council has expressed support for the state's resettlement efforts.
The meeting was attended by top security officials, including the GOC 7 Div, Major General Abubakar Haruna, and traditional rulers from the 7 emirate councils of Borno.
Also the Shehu of Borno, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Dr. Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El-Kanemi, shares Gov. Zulum's concerns, urging the federal government and security agencies to take decisive action before the situation spirals out of control.
