Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum has visited Baga town to discuss modalities for reopening the waterway linking Baga to the Republic of Chad.

He said the move is critical to restoring trade, commerce, and cross-border cooperation.

The governor held a high-level security meeting with military commanders in Baga and Kukawa focused on clearing water routes that have been inaccessible for years due to insurgent activities.

'Our visit to Baga was to interface with the Nigerian military to discuss the modalities for clearing waterways from Baga to the Republic of Chad.

'We have discussed many issues, and insha Allah, the clearance exercise will resume very soon. The governments of Chad and Nigeria are working together to determine how commodities will move between the two countries,' Gov. Zulum said.

After the closed-door session, the governor inspected three projects in Kukawa town aimed at healthcare, education, and social reorientation: an ongoing General Hospital, a Mega Primary School, and the High Islamic College.

The High Islamic College is designed to give out-of-school children and Almajiri pupils a second chance.

It will combine Islamic and Western curricula so graduates can sit for exams and gain admission into universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across Nigeria.

To complement the waterway plan, Gov. Zulum announced that the government will soon distribute farming tools, implements, and improved seedlings to local farmers and returnee fishing communities in the area.

Officials say the package targets immediate needs: tools to restart farms and fishing, plus open waterways to move goods to Chad.
