The Borno State Police Command has arrested nine additional suspected handset snatchers in Maiduguri, bringing the total number of suspects arrested to 12.

The arrest follows the earlier arrest of three suspects on September 10, 2026, who were allegedly using a tricycle (Keke NAPEP) to snatch mobile phones from unsuspecting members of the public.

In a press release issued on Friday by the command's spokesman, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, the command said the breakthrough was achieved through sustained investigation and intelligence gathering by detectives of the State Criminal Investigation Department.

The operation also led to the recovery of seven additional mobile phones and two additional tricycles believed to be connected to the criminal activities.

According to the statement, the suspects will be charged to court upon completion of investigation.

The Commissioner of Police, Borno State Command, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, commended personnel and members of the public whose timely and credible information contributed to the breakthrough.

He reiterated the command's commitment to combating street-level criminality and ensuring the safety and security of residents across the state.

The command called on members of the public to remain law-abiding and continue to support the police with timely information on suspicious activities via 0806 807 5581 and 0802 347 3293.
