At least six soldiers, including a commanding officer, have been killed after suspected Boko Haram terrorists ambushed a military convoy in Yobe State.
According to a report by Yerwa Express News, the incident occurred at about 8:00 a.m. on Monday near Kanamma village in Geidam Local Government Area.
Sources in the local government confirmed the attack, saying the terrorists targeted the convoy which was led by the commanding officer, who holds the rank of Major.
One source told Yerwa Express News that the lead vehicle was hit by an explosion before the attackers opened fire on other vehicles in the convoy.
The source said the commanding officer and three other soldiers in the first vehicle died in the initial attack, while three additional soldiers were killed during the ensuing exchange of gunfire.
Casualties on the side of the terrorists could not be ascertained as of press time, but sources noted that troops also inflicted heavy losses on the attackers.
The attack comes amid persistent disturbances along the Geidam-Kanamma and Mayamti routes, which sources said had remained closed for months due to terrorist activities.
Meanwhile, Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, visited the Theatre Command of Operation Hadin Kai in Borno on Saturday to boost troops' morale and intensify operations to rescue abducted victims.
