The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) is facing persistent water shortages due to infrastructural issues, including facility failures and frequent power outages.
Despite repeated efforts to address these problems, students continue to suffer from periodic shortages.
Gloria Gajere Danapu, a final-year Animal Science student, expressed frustration with the situation.
'This is an issue we've been battling with for a long time.
'I am not happy with what's going on. There's no electricity, and now the issue of water has risen again,' she said.
Chinampi Challangwa, a Nursing student, echoed similar concerns.
'We urge the university management to look into the issue because we students are suffering with a lack of water and electricity.
'We have to struggle for water and use our money to charge phones despite the current hardship,' she said.
Shamsudeen Anas, a mass communication student, described the water scarcity as a recurring problem.
'Even the places that hardly lack water during situations are now facing the same challenge. We can't even access water to cook, bathe, and do our normal activities,' he said.
He pleaded with the school management to provide a permanent solution.
'This issue will affect our day-to-day activities on campus,' he added.
Management response
In response, the Students' Union Government (SUG) President, Hafiz Mohammad Bello, in a statement issued on Monday, assured students that efforts are underway to restore water supply after the main dam's unexpected failure.
Bello attributed the shortage to the dam's failure and emphasized the administration's swift response.
'The university management and I have been working tirelessly to resolve this issue. We've provided fuel for the generators to pump water to the dams,' the statement reads.
He appealed for patience and understanding, assuring students that the incident was unforeseen and unintentional.
'We are committed to doing everything possible to restore normal water supply as soon as possible,' he said.
He confirmed that restoration efforts are currently in progress, with fuel provision to power equipment and pump water to campus dams.
Students are encouraged to cooperate during this challenging period.
