Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has supported 250 widows in the state with N50,000 to celebrate this year's Christmas.
This was disclosed in statement issued on Sunday by the governor's spokesman, Mal. Dauda Iliya.
According to him, the gesture is part of the governor's efforts to alleviate the economic challenges faced by the less privileged in the state.
He said the widows, who did not travel for the holidays, received the cash support to help them celebrate Christmas with their loved ones.
In the statement, Chairman of Ohaneze All Progressive Congress (APC) support group, Chief Ugochukwu Egwidike said Gov. Zulum has made significant strides in providing succour to the needy with various initiatives aimed at alleviating poverty and promoting social welfare.
The governor's administration has also been providing free transport to non-indigenes during the yuletide season since 2020, with the aim of bridging the gap in mobility and connectivity, and promoting economic growth and development.
In a related development, the governor's wife, Falmata Babagana Zulum, also disbursed N30 million cash and food items to 600 Christian widows and orphans as Christmas welfare packages.
The governor's efforts have been praised by various stakeholders, including the Oba of Yorubas in Borno State, Alhaji Hassan Alao Yusuf, who noted that the transport scheme to the non-indigenes has depicted the detribalised nature of the governor.
