Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has appealed to the people of Chibok and Damboa Local Government Areas to remain resilient and calm in the face of recent attacks by suspected Boko Haram terrorists.
The attacks, which occurred in Bamzir, Njilang, Shikarkir, and Yimirmugza village of Chibok, resulted in the deaths of five people, displacement of 74 persons, and destruction of property worth millions of Naira. The attacks also destroyed five churches, market stalls, and business premises.
According to a statement issued on Friday by Borno's commissioner of information and internal security, Prof. Usman Tar, the governor received security briefs on the multiple attacks and reached out to the affected communities to offer his condolences.
Gov. Zulum acknowledged that the attacks are reminiscent of the 2014 abduction of over 200 school girls and expressed sadness that the insurgents are targeting Chibok again, just as the community is rebuilding.
Despite the challenges, the governor noted that the majority of the people of Chibok have remained firm and calm, refusing to be intimidated by the insurgents.
He assured the community that the government and security agencies will work tirelessly to prevent future attacks and improve military tactics.
The Borno State Security Council, which convened on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, noted that while the military has a firm grip on the security space, there are pockets of vulnerable enclaves that require enhanced security measures.
The council thanked the troops for their efforts and called on them to plug the identified loopholes.
Prof. Tar said that the Borno State Government believes that the recent rise in insurgent attacks is targeted at newly resettled towns and economically viable communities, with the aim of sabotaging the state's resettlement and recovery plan. However, the government is committed to not allowing anyone to derail its plans, as enshrined in the state policy on durable solutions to internal displacement and the 25-Year Development Plan.
The governor urged the people of Chibok to remain resolute and resilient, as the insurgents fear a people who stand up against them.
He assured the community that the government will continue to work towards restoring peace and stability in the state.
